Produce Market Report

With temperatures soaring across Queensland and most of Australia, we’re looking for light and easy ways to stay cool.

This week, we’ve got an abundance of passionfruit which is perfect for your Australia Day pavlovas. Both the panama and sweetheart variety are great in value and quality, and eating especially sweet at the moment. Also plentiful in supply are plump-sized figs from Grantham. For a delicious treat, melt butter and honey in a fry pan and place cut figs side down. Cook until the figs start to caramelise and serve with whipped cream, yoghurt or ice cream on the side.

Stone fruits continue to shine, but savour them while you still can as they won’t be around for much longer, with both the Australian cherry and apricot season ending soon. Honey Gold and Keitt mangoes from northern Queensland have hit the market replacing Kensington Pride and Calypso mangoes as their season also comes to an end. Likewise, get in quick to find the last of the valencia oranges, with new season navels due to arrive soon.

This week, the heatwave continues to impact supplies on vegetables. We’re seeing a limited supply of broccoli, cauliflower and celery but tomatoes are bouncing back, particularly the grape and cherry varieties. The best buys in veggies this week are locally-grown capsicums. Both the green and red varieties are exceptional in size and quality and perfect for your barbecues, pizzas and grilled kebabs.

Our top pick for the week is dragon fruit. Unusual looking with spikey leaf-like stems on pinkish red or yellow skin, this fruit comes in both red and white flesh varieties and has a mild flavour and texture – similar to a kiwi but with a slight crunch. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, combine with other fruits to make a striking fruit salad mix, or enjoy in a smoothie, dessert or jams.
