This week the Brisbane Produce Market is filled with a refreshing citrus aroma and a large variety of Winter fruit and vegetables.

In berries, we are seeing improved supplies of strawberries and blueberries from local towns of Queensland, whilst raspberries are eating beautifully. Leading the way in fruit this week is the citrus family with juicy bright oranges, different varieties of mandarins including Daisy, Hickson and Honey Murcott, local lemons and limes, and delicious grapefruit from Mundubbera – all available in good supply.

Looking for a different ingredient with a citrus burst? Try finger limes – this unique Australian citrus offers a burst of refreshing, zingy flavour together with a delightful crisp caviar like texture. You can add finger limes to seafood dishes, cocktails, gelato and granita.

Apples and pears are in-season and calling out for a crumble topping such as the Pink Lady apple variety, a great buy at the moment along with Packham and Josephine pears. New South Wales and Queensland growers have reported an abundant supply of passionfruit will be arriving soon in the Market. So, make sure to make the most of this tropical fruit as it is of great value and excellent quality. Besides eating straight from the shell, passionfruit pulp can be used in an unlimited number of dishes such as fruit salads, ice-creams, sorbets, as a topping for pavlovas, cheesecakes and fruit flans or incorporated into cakes, biscuits and icings.

Pomegranate, custard apples and figs from Childers are eating beautifully however supplies of rockmelon, bananas and tamarillos are short. Other value buys include kiwi fruit, yellow pawpaw, pineapple, watermelon and dragon fruit.

Stir fries are a great dinner option as they are packed full of veggies and tied together with a sauce. We recommend capsicum, cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms, shallots and button squash – all offering good value. Or simply go green with local broccoli, Gatton-grown snow peas and sugar snaps, Gympie-grown beans, kale and silverbeet.

Asian vegetables such as bitter melon, wombok and bok choy are in good supply along with water chestnuts and corn from Bowen. Zucchini and cucumbers are in moderate supply whereas purple cabbage and celeriac continue to be bestsellers. Celeriac is a versatile vegetable shaped like a round bulb with a firm, creamy white flesh and leaves similar to celery. Eat it raw in salads or roast it to bring out a sweet flavour.

Nourishing soups are among Winter favourites and classic ingredients like leeks, corn, pumpkin, sweet potatoes and tomatoes are plentiful. Bright purple eggplants from Glasshouse Mountains are excellent quality as are fennel, beetroot and radish.

This week’s top pick is rhubarb. It is characterised by its long, crimson to light green stalks topped with large green leaves. Although a vegetable, it is often treated as a fruit due to its sour and slightly sweet taste. Choose rhubarb that has crisp, upright, firm stalks and fresh-looking leaves. Stalks of rhubarb can be baked in tarts and crumbles, tossed into salads or made into chutneys, jams or relishes and served alongside meat, chicken and fish.
