Christmas is only days away and with a fantastic range of fruit and vegetables at the Brisbane Produce Market, vibrant rich Christmas desserts, bowls and platters full of produce are sure to be a spectacular addition to the festive table this year.

Peaches, nectarines, plums and grapes are all in good supply. Limes and passionfruit are all also in good supply and ideal for summer fruit salads and cocktails. One of our favourites is the Panama passionfruit, which is especially sweet now.

Cherries are in high demand this Christmas. Look for brightly coloured, glossy fruit with green stems still attached. Enjoy cherries simply on their own, or add to Christmas trifles, tarts, or an indulgent chocolate pavlova. Make the most of this summer favourite while the 100 day season lasts.

Lychees are always popular and are eating well at the moment. Choose fruit that is firm and springy, with red or pink skin. Store lychees in the fridge for up to a week or you can even freeze them for up to six months.

Heat has affected some vegetables this week leading to shorter supplies of zucchini, Lebanese and Continental cucumbers. Gourmet, cherry and grape varieties of tomatoes from all areas are also in good supply and great quality.  Iceberg lettuce is short due to hail damage in Toowoomba.

Perfect for your Christmas baked dinners, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins and onions are all in good supply this week. To achieve the perfect Christmas dinner, all roast vegies should be cut to roughly the same size to allow for even cooking. Toss in a light seasoned oil mix prior to cooking and don’t forget to give each vegetable a little breathing space on the tray to allow for a crisp roasted perfection.  When serving, garnish with a selection of your favorite fresh herbs to add some colour and extra flavour to your Christmas table.

This week’s top pick has to be the Mango.  Mangos are always a popular choice with a strong demand of all varieties including the R2E2 and Kensington Pride. For a quick and simple dessert the whole family will love, combine fresh cut Mango with a generous scoop of ice-cream and garnish with roasted almonds for a quick and easy mango sundae.  Alternatively, try topping off your breakfast with fresh slices of mango. They’re delicious on any cereals, pancakes or waffles.
