The cooler autumn weather and change of growing season means there is more Queensland grown produce in the Brisbane Produce Market this week.

The star performer is the citrus family with lemon, limes, imperial mandarins all in good supply along with Queensland grown Navel oranges. Looking for an energy boost? Blend bananas which are in good supply with peanut butter, coconut milk, honey and cocoa powder for a no-guilt chocolate milkshake.

New season Hass avocados are slowly replacing Shepards. To ensure the avocado is creamy and ripe on the inside, gently squeeze the top of the stem to see if it is relatively soft, but still a tad firm or ask your local fruit shop retailer to pick one for you.

While supplies are reasonable for strawberries and raspberries, we are noticing limited supplies for blueberries. Seasonal treats like Pinks Mammoth custard apples and persimmons are eating beautifully, grab them while you can. Other great value buys this week include super sweet red pawpaw, Packham pears, apples, pineapples, rockmelons, pomegranate, Aussie gold kiwis and black sapphire grapes.

Keep an eye out for Angelino plums, this variety appears later in the season and is a dense, crunchy and sweet plum with a tiny seed. This dark red fruit with a pale-yellow flesh can be eaten raw or can be prepared as a spiced chutney to serve with cheese or cold cuts.

With the milder temperature and consistent weather, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to vegetables. Handpicked beans from Gympie, Asian veggies, snake beans, baby corn and Lebanese cucumbers are all in good supply. Add instant flavour and aroma to your dinners with fresh ginger, garlic, coriander, parsley, mint, fennel and spring onions.

Red capsicums from Lockyer Valley are a must this week and should be added when creating stir-frys. Other stir-fry vegetables include cabbage, mushrooms, carrots and snow peas all available in moderate supply. With Queensland growing season looming expect broccoli and cauliflower in great supply and prices to ease.

Add crunch to your salads and nutrients to frittatas with leafy greens like rocket, spinach, leeks, kale, silverbeet and iceberg lettuce all in plentiful supply. Zucchini from Bundaberg, eggplants from North Queensland, pumpkins and sweet potatoes all represent good value buying this week. Truss and cherry tomatoes are in good supply, but prices are variable.

This week’s top pick are apples, with great supplies of all new season varieties ranging from Royal Gala, Pink Lady, Granny Smith and Red Delicious. Apples are praised as a “miracle food” for being rich in antioxidants and dietary fibre, making it one of the world’s most consumed fruits. Choose apples which are firm to touch and with full colour. Slice royal galas into salads or eat as snacks, use Granny Smith or Pink Lady for baking tarts, cakes and crumbles and Red Delicious for fresh preparations.
