Produce Market Report

There’s never been a better week for green salads with fantastic supplies of iceberg and cos lettuce fresh from the Toowoomba region. Mushrooms have caught our eye this week, with good supplies of quality button and swiss brown mushrooms from Woodford.

Tropical fruits from Northern Queensland – mangoes, pawpaws, limes and lychees make for a quintessential summer experience.

Stonefruits are well into their season with an abundant supply of quality fruit at reasonable prices. Cherries are also plentiful. Enjoy them while they last though, as the Australian Cherry season only lasts for 100 days.

Keen to try something new? We recommend trying locally grown kohlrabi from Gatton. Whilst it may look strange with its many stalks; it has a mild, slightly sweet radish-like flavor and can be eaten raw or cooked – perfect in salads or stir fries.

Several vegetables are fantastic buying this week, including silverbeet and hand-picked beans from Stanthorpe. Zucchini, sweet potato and all varieties of cucumber from Bundaberg, are well priced and good quality eating. Asian vegetables are also well supplied this week, including locally grown broccoli, eggplant and yellow, green and red capsicums.

A quick and easy way to add flavor to your meals is with fresh herbs such as mint, basil, coriander, dill and parsley – all are in excellent supply.

Shelves are overflowing with all varieties of tomatoes. This week’s top pick is Truss tomatoes, which is experiencing an all-time low in prices and is great quality eating. Now is the time for tomato-based salsas, bruschettas and caprese salads.
